Mathematics Unit 8: Perimeter and Area
April 8–23, 2014
Inquiry Question:
Essential Learning Goals:
Apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles. (ELG.MA.4.MRF3)
Concepts:
Angle measurement, iteration, measurement, decomposition, nonoverlapping parts, perimeter, area, measurement systems, conversion
Academic Vocabulary: Right-click on vocabulary to look it up in the dictionary.
Measure, distance, estimate, solve, convert

Technology:
- Rectangle Multiplication: http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_192_g_2_t_1.html?from=search.html?qt=circle+21 (visualize multiplying two numbers as an area)
- Geoboard: http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_277_g_1_t_3.html?open=activities&from=search.html?qt=geoboard (explore two-dimensional shapes and their properties of area and perimeter and rational number concepts; click Measures button when shape is selected to see area and perimeter measurements)
Common Misconception:
Students confuse perimeter and area. Perimeter is a measure of length, or distance; area is a measure of surface. The word “perimeter” contains the word “rim.”
